Dorie Witt's Guide to Surviving Bullies - an evening with author Brigitte Berman

Tuesday, September 7th - Duxbury Middle School Auditorium

Duxbury's No Place for Hate Committee presents 16-year-old author Brigitte Berman.  Brigitte will speak to interested students and parents about her book Dorie Witt's Guide to Surviving Bullies, a fictional account of a girl, Dorie Witt, who deals with many challenges that children of all ages face.  Dorie endures the difficult transition from grade school to junior high.  She offers realistic approaches to solving problems and provides a "how to resource guide" from the unique viewpoint of a teenager, and leaves us with the universal message of tolerance.

Based on personal experience, Berman wrote this book in eighth grade at the age of 14 because she felt the need to raise consciousness and take action on the topic of bullying.  She has spent the last year touring schools and communities speaking about all aspects of bullying.  For more information, please call the No Place for Hate Committee at (781)934-8388, or email noplaceforhate@duxinterfaith.com.  To learn more about Brigitte Berman and her book, please visit http://www.doriewitt.com/.

Tuesday, September 28th   7:30pm presentation, 7pm reception - Duxbury Performing Arts Center

Texting. Facebook. Formspring. Sub-bullying. Sexting. Bullycide.

A culture that we knew nothing about five years ago now challenges students, parents and educators daily. It infects our children’s lives, our family life and our community in ways we don’t even realize.

But it’s also a world that can be managed.

Join us on Tuesday, September 28th at 7:30pm for a presentation and discussion on bullying and what we can do to address this growing community concern.

  • Learn about the new definitions, initiatives and laws on bullying and cyber-bullying, and what this means for you and your child.

  • Find out what pre-teens and teens are really doing on-line
  • Understand how to guide your child through the social and emotional  terrain in school and online
  • Discuss the best ways to communicate and build partnerships between parents, students and schools

Hear from the experts. Ask questions. Get answers.

A Presentation by Dr. Elizabeth Englander, director of MARC (Massachusetts Aggressive Reduction Center) and lead consultant in Massachusetts on bullying and cyber bullying legislation, followed by

A Q&A Panel of Experts and Educators featuring:

Dr. Elizabeth Englander

OCTOBER

Motherhood Uncensored: Straight Talk on Life in the Trenches with Infants and Toddlers

October 6, 13, 20, & 27    9:30-11am - Duxbury Free Library, Merry Room

Parenting little ones can be rewarding, but it can also be overwhelming, tiring, and frustrating.  It changes priorities, career goals, friendships….everything.  Often moms feel like they have landed on another planet with all of their needs pushed wayside.  And because these struggles are not always easy to chat about, sometimes moms feel isolated, wondering if they’re the only ones that feel this way.

Join us for a weekly discussion group to connect with other moms to exchange helpful ideas and tips and talk about the unique challenges of the “Mom” role.  Parenting expert and author Lynne Griffin will facilitate this series of 4 weekly meetings in October (see dates above).  Each meeting will focus on a different topic, to be determined by participants’ interests and needs.  Possible topics include:

  • Adjusting to the “Mom” role

  • Sorting through parenting advice

  • Managing sleep - yours and the kids’

  • Creating balance among the chaos

  • Adjusting existing relationships and building new ones

  • Expectations vs. reality

With 20 years of private practice parent counseling, Lynne contributes weekly to Fox 25 Morning News as a parenting expert. She is the author of Negotiation Generation -Take Back Your Parental Authority Without Punishment, the Director of Proactive Parenting, and teaches at Wheelock College in Boston.

For more information about Lynne Reeves Griffin, please visit http://www.lynnegriffin.com/books/negotiation-generation/

Registration for this program is $90, and includes babysitting if needed.  Please register early, as space is limited.  Online registration will begin September 7th.

Join Diane Dunlap of College Assist and The Parent Connection in a series of four workshops for parents of high school juniors to calm the frenzy surrounding the college search and application process.  Turn it into a learning experience…not a power struggle…and enjoy (yes, enjoy!) the process.  During four interactive sessions, Ms. Dunlap will share her 22 years of experience as a Guidance Counselor and Director of Guidance at Duxbury High School, and provide methods, resources and tools to help better understand and manage the process.

Session 1, October 21:  “Learn the Basics, Simplify the Approach”

Session 2, November 18:  “Don’t Cram for the Event….Organize the Process”

Session 3,  January 13:  “Attitude….Avoid the Social Pressures”

Session 4,  March 24:  “Become an Educated Consumer”

The workshops will be held at the Duxbury Student Union lounge on Thursday evenings from 7-8:30 p.m.  Each workshop will include an interactive presentation by Ms. Dunlap, anecdotes, a Q&A and a handout with resources for further reading.  Registration and payment are required in advance and space is limited to the first 30 people who sign up.   The cost for the program is $100 per person.  If space permits, spouses may attend for an additional $50 for the four sessions with no handout.
