Youth Sports Concussions
Wednesday, March 7th, 7-9:00pm at Duxbury Senior Center
Sponsored by Duxbury Municipal Commission on Disabilities, Duxbury Recreation Department
Duxburyʼs Ride PHAT organization. (Protect your Head at All Times)
Guest Speakers: Anu Mehta, Brain Injury Association of MA, Tim McPhillips, Athletic Trainer, Local Parents of injured athletes
The incidence of concussions in youth sports is now at almost 4 million per year! Sadly, this figure is believed to be under reported for many reasons, including a lack of understanding about the signs and symptoms of concussion and second injury syndrome (SIS*). The Massachusetts legislature passed a law** in October of 2010 which has a direct impact on how coaches, parents and athletes need
to deal with suspected concussions which occur during games or practices. While the state and the MIAA have aimed their education and enforcement efforts at sports concussions at the high school level, nothing formal is yet available for youth sports players, coaches
or families.
An expert from the Brain Injury Association of MA will speak about the risks and signs of concussion. A short video will also be viewed and local parents of students who have had concussions will speak about their children's difficulties. In addition, Tim McPhillips, Athletic Trainer at Duxbury High School, will speak about ImPact testing, the pre/post-testing for cognition that is currently being used in sports. This event is free.
*Second-impact syndrome (SIS) is a condition in which the brain swells rapidly and catastrophically after a person suffers a second concussion before symptoms from an earlier one have subsided. This second blow, after an initial concussion, even the mildest grade of concussion, can lead to SIS. These repeated mild brain injuries occurring within a short period (i.e., hours, days, or weeks) can be fatal or lead to devastating disabilities and impairments.
